The 1980s satanic panic was primarily shaped and promoted by popular culture and media. Today we can still see evidence of lingering fears over satanic cults and rituals through popular culture and that our media continues to shape and promote fears of Satanism and satanic cults. On January 12, 2014, premium cable network HBO aired a new television series called True Detective. I will explain how True Detective helps reawaken Satanism and satanic cult fears by referencing and mimicking cases that came about during the 1980s satanic panic. In addition to reviving old fears, True Detective reminds us that Satanism and satanic cults are still a threat to us today. By basing the shows first and third seasons on horrific real Satanic Panic crimes imbued with Satanic imagery stirring belief and fear of Satanism for many Americans.
