The Extreme Summer of 2018: Norwegian Weather News and the Politics of Weatherlore

Kyrre Kverndokk (University of Bergen, Norway)

This paper examines the Norwegian news coverage of the severe Northern European heatwave during the summer of 2018. Weather reports are quite popular in Norway, and hot and sunny summer weather has traditionally been described in enjoyable terms by news media. Yet, this year the news also related the weather to climate change. The chapter shows how feel-good news turned into a kind of weatherlore in the age of climate change, using the local weather as a prefiguration of global futures. Through this process, the politics of climate change has also become the politics of vernacular weather experiences.
