In recent years, the rise of new media has opened a space for the self-expression of women in China. Compared with expressions in traditional media, female expressions in new media reflect more of a connection to place. A feminist analysis of a women’s sense of place in new media suggests authentic, multiple references to place and local people that challenge regional stereotypes. This paper explores how women show their regional characteristics and identities in new media and analyzes the driving forces behind the concept of returning to place in modern China. The paper argues that returning to place also means women are creating a distinctive, global sense of place.
