Teaching Socially-Engaged and Community-Driven Ethnography in the College Classroom: A Material Culture Approach to Introductory and Writing-Intensive Courses

Incoronata  Nadia Inserra (Virginia Commonwealth University)

In this presentation, I describe my material-culture approach to the college writing classroom at Virginia Commonwealth University; my goal is to discuss ways that this approach helps empower VCU college students to speak up not only about Richmond, Virginia’s problematic historical legacy, but also against racial and social injustice within their own communities of belonging. By researching and writing about local material culture (both on and off campus), students become active participants in current local conversations among policy-makers, tradition-bearers, and the public.
