The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America: Creating Community Archive

Iryna Voloshyna (Indiana University)

The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, based in Detroit, is a music ensemble that stems from the Ukrainian folk music tradition. The musicians – bandurists – came to the United States as political refugees after WWII from Displaced Persons camps in Germany. The ensemble, which dates back its history to 1918, recently celebrated its centennial anniversary. Now, they are working on establishing a community archive in order to collect, curate, preserve, and publish materials from the UBC's history. This presentation showcases the creation of the UBC community archives and my involvement in this process during the summer of 2021.
