Daniel Reyes (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)
In this presentation, I’ll share excerpts from the podcast project “Dancing Cumbia in the Time of COVID.” The podcast explores how Durham-based dance group Takiri Folclor Latino adapted their rehearsals to meet the challenges of COVID-19 to create and maintain ritual spaces of healing, identity, and community. Just as Takiri adapted to the pandemic’s challenges, I also adapted my research methods: participating in Takiri’s online dance rehearsals, interviewing members via Zoom, and joining their WhatsApp group. This podcast is a culmination of thesis research during my folklore graduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill.
