Creating Comfort via Embodiment in a Disembodied Time: Fieldwork, Intention, and Cultural Practices

Rachelle  H. Saltzman (Oregon Folklife Network)

During this past year, I’ve been involved in extensive virtual fieldwork with individuals in three Oregon tribes. Much of that work has focused on the gathering and processing of traditional foods. Though my folklore practice has been virtual, I’ve been documenting and embodying the actual practices of cultural reproduction. It is in the doing, the making, of traditional foods that we perform our identities and indeed embody them. Working with others to do this and sharing traditional foods with others is what has brought comfort during this time of global discomfort.
