This paper examines the controversial response to the When We Were Young festival by the elder emo subculture—which is comprised of people who enjoy emo music from the early 2000s and are now in their 30s and 40s. The presenter of this paper identifies as an elder emo, is a member of affiliated Facebook groups, and has purchased a ticket to the When We Were Young festival. Speaking as an insider, the presenter will analyze the turmoil surrounding the event, noting in particular how it divided this subculture and created additional division among emo music fans of various ages.
