This presentation highlights individual textile artists and entrepreneurs from Dong and Baiku Yao communities in Southwest China, focusing on their experiences, creative strategies, and attitudes within shifting social and economic realities. Based on fieldtrips to Nandan (2015, 2017) and Sanjiang (2018) counties in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, this report surveys important ways the local production, circulation, and use of textiles and traditional ethnic dress are being refashioned through individual acts of preservation, commercialization, and self-representation on an expanding national stage.
