This presentation will outline a model of leader and leadership development initially created for the cultural sustainability program at Goucher College. The model begins with requiring students to examine the nature of Action proposed in Arendt’s The Human Condition. In this conception, action is activity and speech together, and drives the human connectivity necessary to generate and use power. Adding a working theory of culture as negotiated agreements, the model supports future culture workers in understanding how to partner with communities, navigate unequal social dynamics, and effect both preservation and transformation in their work with culture groups.
