6 months, 3 days: How Voluminous Arts Created Authentic Space for Transgender People Making Experimental Artwork and Music in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Gavilán Rayna Russom (Goucher College)

Voluminous Arts is an organization that supports transgender experimental musicians. From September 2022 - February 2023, we undertook a 6-month residency that culminated in a 3-day festival. Because of the intimate connections between transgender experience and experimental creativity, a framework needed to be created from scratch to guide these events. Research into the Indigenous history and industrialization of Gowanus, where they took place, was a critical component of developing that framework. This paper looks at both the process of building these events and the events themselves, locating both within emerging conversations about the folklore and folklife of transgender people.
