In this paper, I will draw on my participant observation at punk shows in Bowling Green and Lexington, Kentucky, and interviews with queer people and women I’ve met through these shows in order to analyze gendered performances. Women in punk have long been categorized as ‘others’ fighting to be taken seriously by men in the scene. While historically this may be true, based on my current research this doesn’t seem to be the dominant narrative. Punk rock is changing and so should our analysis of it.
