American studies at Penn State Harrisburg is a lively academic program with engaged and accessible faculty and staff. The program integrates perspectives on U.S. history, culture, and society, while emphasizing the application of American studies to areas of public and global interest. Major areas of research focus include material and popular culture; folklore and ethnography; history and politics; gender studies; regional, urban, and environmental studies; and public heritage and museum studies.

The program manages the Pennsylvania Center for Folklore. The center is dedicated to promoting knowledge of diverse historical and contemporary folklore and folklife traditions and communities.
