The Creative Writing and Storytelling Section hosts this virtual forum of Milbre Burch’s Holding Up the Sky, an ensemble-driven play grounded in world folktales, performed by a multicultural cast. Respondents will discuss the aesthetic, academic, and social impact of the playwright’s engagement with oral tradition tales from cultures not her own. Discussants include junior and senior scholars from the section as well as the playwright and the director who commissioned the play in 2009. Discussants, attendees and others can access the virtual screening prior to the forum. Excerpts will be played during the session.
