11-03 Weathering the Storm from a Small Ship: Leading Grassroots Organizations and Community-Driven Folklife Programs through the Pandemic

Monday, October 18, 9:30 am–11:00 am

session will be recorded and available for later viewing online

Chair: Naomi Sturm-Wijesinghe (Philadelphia Folklore Project)

Forum participants:

Elena Martinez (City Lore)

Laura Orleans (New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center)

Nancy Solomon (Long Island Traditions)

This forum will share firsthand experiences, reflections, best practices and lessons learned from leading small community-driven organizations/folklife programs through the 2020-21 pandemic, as well as the ongoing struggles of racial inequality and the global environmental crisis. The forum’s female leaders will also share how they are currently reimagining institutional recovery, and what the past year has taught them about their respective organizations’ mission and place within their region’s cultural ecology. The discussion aims to transcend the proverbial "move to digital programming," and get at the crux of leading small nonprofits in what continue to be unprecedented circumstances nationwide.
