We will share the new award-winning documentary film, Thumbs Up for Mother Universe: Stories from the Life of Lonnie Holley, with an introduction by folklorist Peggy Bulger and a Q&A with filmmaker George King and subject/artist Lonnie Holley. The film includes footage shot over a 30-year period of the self-taught artist and musician’s life. It invites discussion on a variety of subjects including, race, social class, traditional culture, art, spirituality, African American history, and environmentalism. Much of Holley’s visual art involves the practice of repurposing and recycling found objects. The filmmakers are very interested in people’s responses to the film or interest in future screenings.
