As we welcome the publication of Performing Environmentalisms: Expressive Culture and Ecological Change (University of Illinois Press, 2021), we gather six of the book’s authors to address ideas flowing from our collaboration. We choose “right relations” as the unifying thread to connect our forum contributions, and focus on representations and practices expressing the emplacement of culture in nature. We pool our thinking and our experiences as folklorists, ethnographers, and activists, to pursue the theme of right relations in the context of existential threats to people, their communities and cultures, and ultimately, to the persistence of an inhabitable planet.
