34-02 Write Folklore’s Future: An Op-Ed Workshop

Wednesday, October 20, 2:15 pm–3:45 pm

session will be recorded and available for later viewing online

Sponsored by the American Folklore Society Media and Public Outreach Committee

Chair: Debra Lattanzi Shutika (George Mason University) and Susan Eleuterio (Goucher College)

In 2008, folklorist Katie Orenstein founded the Op-Ed Project to ensure people from under-represented groups, particularly women and people of color, have an opportunity to shape discussions on important issues. Drawing on the Op-Ed project’s open access resources, this workshop will allow participants to draft an op-ed during the workshop and will provide support to see those drafts to publication in the months afterward. This workshop also provides participants with the opportunity to call attention to current situations in which folkloristic research is essential for policymakers, tradition-bearers and their communities, and the public.
